US farmers use relay crops to boost their profitability

After around eight seasons, Jason Mauck, who farms 1,200 hectares in Muncie beside a 12,000 wean-to-finish indoor pig facility, has refined his relay cropping technique.cropping to increase revenue.

Relay cropping is a type of double cropping in which two crops are planted and harvested at various periods during the growing season, but grow together for a portion of the season.

Winter wheat is sown in strips in the autumn and harvested in July using Jason’s method. In March or April, soy beans are sown in between the wheat strips, and in October, they are harvested.

“At first, I believed we could double the output by doing everything we do with monoculture soy beans and wheat,” says Jason.

Naturally, that wasn’t feasible because both crops can only receive so much water and sunlight. Finding this equilibrium and learning how to start optimising the economics took around four years.
